Braves’ Ronald Acuña Jr. Placed on IL Due to Achilles Inflammation, Set for MRI

The Atlanta Braves have officially placed five-time All-Star Ronald Acuña Jr. on the 10-day injured list as he deals with inflammation of his right Achilles tendon. The severity of this injury will be determined following further testing scheduled on Wednesday.

Acuña felt the discomfort while pursuing a ball in right field. The team’s manager, Brian Snitker, mentioned after a 9-6 defeat to the Royals, “It’s an Achilles issue, it’s going to take some time. He’ll be on the IL, and hopefully in about 10 days, it will start to improve.”

Acuña first noticed the discomfort in his calf area on Monday night when he made a speedy dash from first to home on Austin Riley’s double, contributing to a 10-7 win over Kansas City. Despite experiencing pain, he insisted on playing the following day, only to end up limping while attempting to catch a fly ball during the game against the Royals.

“It happened when I scored from first to home on that play,” Acuña explained post-game through an interpreter. “I’ll be examined on Wednesday, and we’ll see what happens from there.”

Despite limping off the field, Acuña expressed a desire to remain in the game. He was on his way to his position when Eli White was sent out to replace him. The fact that Acuña was able to jog into the dugout offered some hope that the Achilles injury might not be a complete tear, suggesting a possible return this season.

“I was out there hoping they wouldn’t hit it my way, and of course, whenever I think that, they always do,” Acuña reflected. “I mentioned the pain on Monday, and everyone said, ‘Take the day off if you need to.’ I’ve already missed so much time due to injuries, and I didn’t want to miss any more.”
